Jerry was always in good spirits, true to his word, and a fellow democrat of the highest order. He was a staunch defender of the poor and physically challenged among us. That adds up to a life that mattered. He will be missed
Terry Jones - Former Prosecuting Attorney
On behalf of Jerry's Lockport High School classmates, I send our deepest condolences to Carline, and the entire family on his passing. Jerry was a close friend and buddy to many! His smile, his wit.... and his royal blue FFA (Future Farmers of America) jacket are etched in our "hearts" forever. I'm glad I was able to hug him and call him "brother' one last time, at our last reunion! Jerry was a special guy, and will always be in our hearts! "We hold all of you , extra close to our hearts, in these times of loss". With love, Jerry's classmates!

Rest in peace my friend – Jerry & I grew-up in a rural area called Homer Township IL, our families were friends for many a year and not only were we classmates at Lockport Central High School, we also attended Sunday school and church together at Homer Congregational Church not far from the Paddock farm. May God wrap His arms around the whole family during this time of lamentation, remembrance and celebration of Jerry’s life on this earth. Wil Burcham, friend & classmate - LTHS Class of 1969

I missed the Times Obit due to Labor Day. I ran into Nancy Hyslip this afternoon and heard this most sad news of Jerry's passing. I really don't know wheather to begin with professional accolades or with personal reminders of Jerry's life. When I started practicing law circa 1990, Jerry was the guy who tried cases! Tough cases!!! I'll never forget when he and Denny defended Strawhacker in the Club Death rape case when Terry brought in the FBI guru. Talk about the deck being stacked against you! Nevertheless, my best memories of Jerry come from his love of his wife and family--and going to Oaklawn Park for his love of racing. Damn--I'll miss you Buddy!!!
John F. Greenhaw - Friend/Mentor
Carline, our deepest sympathies are with you and your family at this most difficult time. The photos of Jerry with friends and family, that were meaningful to him were wonderful ....we especially loved the pictures of him with pets. He had many soft spots and was always a kind soul.

What can you say about someone who dedicated his whole life to helping others? He wasted not a day, and he made this world a better place.

To Carline, Susie and Richard, and all the family: I was just telling my boyfriend Dave this past week about Jerry and his work on the Clinton campaign, his champion Angus cattle, great wit and sense of humor...And how he trained his Dobermans (years ago,) to be good, gentle dogs. We had great times when Jerry was younger--he knew how to make everyone laugh. I'll be with you all in spirit tomorrow. My (our) thoughts and prayers are with you all. Love, Cousin Deb.
Deb Rowley - First Cousin

Jerry was one of the first people I met when I moved here 25 years ago. I tormented him with calls.."I got another one for you Jerry, please represent him, he has no one"...and he always did, without hesitation. He was a true public servant and will be missed.

I first met Jerry when I "interviewed" with him at the Public Defender's office. I had no idea at the time what a great mentor and friend he would become to me. Thank you Jerry for the great memories. I'll always give you credit when I use any of the many great quotes I heard from you over the years.

When I started practicing law at the Washington County Public Defender's office, Jerry immediately became a great friend and mentor. He was such a seasoned great trial lawyer; and he was the consummate fighter for the common man. Jerry was someone who had the means to do anything in the world, and he chose to spend his entire life as a champion for the marginalized. It was evident at his service yesterday what an enormous impact that his life had on so many others.

Jerry was a dear friend I spent a lot of time with as he was crafting his Lawyer future. He instilled in me a sense of right and wrong, a great work ethic and, as one might expect.....we had SUPER fun. I think about him often. I will always hold Jerry in the highest regard. He was my brother!!
