I have known Joe Kretschmar since my high school basketball days as a player competing against his Fayetteville High School and Hillcrest Junior High teams. I was also fortunate to get to know him as a friend and a mentor while I coached with Joe at Fayetteville High School in the 80's. He was the best of the best, when it came to coaching. Many coaches shaped their coaching philosophies around the things that Joe taught them. He was my mentor in many ways, both as a coach and as a person. Joe was a loyal friend to those that knew him. He shaped many a young man's future through his years as a coach. He was a true legend. He was always able to bring out the best in people that he coached, mentored, and worked with. Mary Francis and family, Joe cast a large shadow and he will be greatly missed by those that knew and loved him. Our thoughts and our prayers are with you today. All of our Love, Terry Gracy

Thanks for all the memories Coach. When once dead to all the things of life and love and godliness, the Lord, in His unfathomable mercy, wrested us from our bed of dust and ash and breathed His spirit of new life into us! We were not His people. We were not His children. We were, in spite of His holy righteousness, the very enemies of His hand. How gracious is He to have awakened His foemen to risen life as His own servants! We are His people! We are His children! Rejoice, O believer! Rejoice in your Lord of mercy and kindness.

I will always remember Coach Kretschmar as my favorite coach and teacher. He taught me to be the best I could be because he expected it every day in and outside of practice. Kevin Kestner

So very sorry to learn of Joe's death. Basketball teammate at U of A, 1954-55. Wonderful ball player, tough on the court, could handle anything. Good friend, good student, who always looked to be supportive to everyone. Tremendous record at Fayetteville. I'm so sorry. Sympathy to the family.

When I saw on TV that it was John Wooden's birthday Wednesday, it made me think of another great coach and I decided to call Joe Kretschmar that day. Before I did, I received several phone calls informing me of his passing. Joe was my coach at FHS but we'd also had a long relationship as sportswriter and coach, and later as golfers (and sometimes rival golfers). Even as a retired duffer, Joe's competitiveness was matched by few. He hated to lose more than he loved to win. I'll never forget a talented teammate, Lynn Waldren, coming back from college and talking about how Joe's high school teams were always so well prepared, moreso than his college team. It wasn't meant as a slight to his college coach but a tribute to Joe and how thoroughly he prepared players for opponents. We didn't always agree with Joe's style -- he was a product of the 1950s coaching philosophy -- but he adapted with time and was seldom, if ever, overmatched on the sideline. Joe could be crass, was always opinionated, but frequently showed me a soft-hearted side of himself that some never knew. No matter how I addressed him -- half the time I called him by name and half the time I called him coach -- it was always obvious he was a friend. And one I've missed the last few years. But good memories of Joe will never fade.

Coach was a great influence on my life and basketball career. Had it not been for the work ethic he instilled in me, I would not have been able to play at the college level, and enjoy the game as much as possible. My blessings to his family.
