Tributes

I have always thought so much of Eldon and Sheila. I have very fond memories of attending their annual Trail Ride. My sister and I would lose sleep the night before, we were so excited about it! One of the things I liked the most about Eldon was how he sincerely thought about what he said before he spoke; and when he did speak, everyone listened. He was very eloquent and I could sit and listen to him talk for hours. I know now, that Eldon is walking side by side with Jesus and the many friends that went on before him. Eldon was a dear friend to our family and a good and faithful servant to God. We will miss him.

Eldon was our daughter-in-law's grandfather. I had the pleasure of being around him several times during the past 8 yrs. He was a nice man and someone that I wish we could have been around more often. His grandaughter, Nikki, and his daughter, Brenda. loved him very much, and so did our grandchildren. He won't be forgotten. Rest in Peace, Eldon.

Eldon and Shiela were both a big part of my growing up years. They moved "next door" when I was in early high school bringing John, Julia, and Clancy with them. I became fast friends almost immediately with Julia over our first afternoon together raking hay....We were riding together on the tractor with John behind us with the bailer on a second tractor. Julia and I thought we were going too slow and shifted it into 3rd as we started down the hill. Needless to say, the hay was flying as were we! Julia and I were laughing histerically, but Eldon who was watching did not find it as funny. We lived to tell about it and I smile everytime I think of our stupid stunt. My brothers and I spent a lot of time with the family riding horses, doing farm work, swimming in the creek, hiking in the woods, and being kids in general. We grew to know Eldon quite well. He was a wonderful man that will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you Eldon, Shiela, Tim, John, Clancy, (and Julia) for bringing so much joy and memories to my life! Eldon, you will be missed! I know you are upstairs standing with Julia right now, smiling down on us. Love, Susan

I would like to thank all of Eldons children for sharing him with me. He became a very important part of my life in the short time I have been a part of the family. He and Sheila always welcomed me into their home with loving arms. I will miss teasing him and seeing that beautiful smile.

Grandpa was a big part of my whole life. I will always remember the Thanksgiving dinners we had up at the big house and how happy Grandpa was having everyone there. He was one of the best Grandpas I could have asked for and I will miss him very much.

How can I sum up 18 years in a few sentences...? Eldon was a big part of Clancy's life and became a big part of mine too. Over the last few days I've realized what a great teacher he was and what a stern task master. I learned by example and he trusted that what he taught was done correctly. Eldon never treated me like I couldn't do what was required...it didn't matter that I was female or at times pregnant, he still expected me to clear brush at 7 months and lie down under a running tractor at 8 months to grease zerts..there was work to be done. I appreciate the lessons taught and the love given and I will miss him very much.
Jennifer McMahon - Daughter-In-Law (clancy)
He was very gracious to me and my son and let us work for him and his wife, Colleen (Tinsley) Withrow back in the late '50's-caring for his three children- while my husband, Bob Findley was overseas. They were precious, precious children and he loved them very much.

Dear Tinsleys and McMahons, I am so sorry to hear that Eldon passed away. He was such a neat man and truely one of a kind. Very warm hearted, caring, and loving. I know you will each miss him so much. I remember how excited all of us girls, who rode horses at The Trails, were when we found out Sheila and Eldon were getting married. We all loved her so much and were so thrilled that he did too! It's hard to believe that wedding took place over 30 years ago in my parent's home. Keep your loved ones close thru your memories. Take care of each other. With Love and Sympathy, Caroline Payne Young

Eldon taught me about birthing calves. Not that I had this great desire to learn though; I was a suburbanite. It was by default. The first time, he was stuck with Jeff Strobel (another neighbor who is partially deaf/blind) and I trying to corral the momma. We were a motley crew but Eldon was patient. The second time, I was ready! I am so fortunatee to have known him and his family!

I met Eldon several years ago but got the pleasure of getting to know him better when I became his Postmaster in our tiny little community of Natural Dam. I have read most of these tributes and we all know Eldon had a little stubborn side...I don't know how many times he got his mailbox vandalized but refused to give up and let the vandals win. However, one day he did give up and came in to rent a box...it was instant friendship and most certainly someone who's stories I will treasure for the rest of my life. I will truly miss him and his life stories! Through him, I have had the pleasure of getting to know Jerry, Brenda and Jennifer. I am so sorry for your loss. Please stop by and visit me when you are in town.

Eldon was a good man and a true icon of a generation that represented what this country is all about - a brave fireman, a father, a grandfather, a cowboy, a friend, and most importantly a God-fearing man. I'll always remember the trail rides Eldon and Sheila hosted at their place. As a kid, I would look forward to those trail rides all year long. I'll always cherish those memories of Eldon and know his legacy will not be forgotten.
Lindsay West - Friend
I have always been very fond of Eldon. Wish over the years we could have spent more time together. Will remember him, his brother, Curtiss, sister Darlene with love.
Peggy (mead) Britton - First Cousin
I write this to Eldon as he can read it from Above: You are a most gracious person. I will never forget the trust you put in me that day in the pasture when the mare was injured - you offered another horse to go get emergency help but I asked for Bo and you gave me your horse to run like hell to get help and we did. Further, I remember the first year we were getting ready for the trail ride and I asked to saddle the horses - again, no questions asked, "do it", warm up Bo and we're off! Again, confidence in a person and an incredible sense of respect I always got from you. Sorry I wrecked your fence post (2 years later) but we got it fixed - no questions asked (Peter and you did the repair work). You were wonderful to talk to sitting at the table or on the back porch - so much to offer! Sheila! I'm still riding horses! I love you all and even though Peter and I are not together anymore (Clancy & Jen), when you come to Fort Worth, don't leave me out! John - I'm still "fishin'" Great memories of the Tinsley and McMahon Family! Love! I'll never forget you Eldon!
Paula R. Moore - Very Good Friend

We met Eldon when our youngest daughter married Sheila's and Eldon's youngest son, Clancy. Eldon was a bit intimidating the first few times I met him, but it didn't take long to realize that the gruff exterior hid a man with a big heart..and he taught Jennifer to do things we never thought we'd see her do. It was easy to see that he loved our mutual grandchildren and that they loved him. We miss that walk up the hill to the big house and the visits with Eldon and Sheila. We will think of Eldon when we visit Jen and Clancy. He will be missed but he left us lots of memories. Lee and Sandy Ingalls
