Obituary

CRAWFORD, Elizabeth C. SAWYERS - Died on last evening, Aunt Betsy Crawford, nee Elizabeth C. Sawyers. She was buried by the side of her husband in the cemetery at this place to-day. Elder Henry Crowell performed the religious rites. She was born in Tennessee in 1797 - was united in marriage to W.D. Crawford in 1821 and come to this county and settled near here in 1831. Aunt Betsy possessed a strong mind and fine constitution, fitting her well for the trials and hardships of the early pioneer. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church for more than sixty years, and died with the hope of peace and happiness beyond the grave. Seven years ago she and her husband deeded their cozy little home to their niece, Callie Neal, and Buck Neal, her husband, to take care of them in their declining years and faithfully did they fulfill that trust. Aunt Betsy is the last of the first settlers of this neighborhood who were adults when they came. Peace to her remains. N. December 22, 1884. [Fayetteville Democrat 1/8/85)
