Capt. Samuel C. Rankin was a teacher, merchant, manufacturer and a two-term member of the NC State Legislature. During the War, he was captain of Company B., 45th NC Regiment.

Sam and Martha moved to Fayetteville, NC in 1871. Samuel was a ruling elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, NC for many years.
