Charles Samuel Rankin enlisted in Mecklenburg County as a Private on September 3, 1861. He served in Company H of the 35th Regiment of the NC Troops. He was reported absent/sick from January through April 1862 and was wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia on July 1, 1862. He was transported to the hospital at Petersburg, VA where he died of typhoid fever. Charles never married.
