Letter "September 19, 1862 Mrs, Rankin after my respects to you, I am very sorry to inform you that C. M. Rankin was shot dead Sept 17 on the field of battle with a great many more. We had a very hard fight at this place 8 miles north of Harpers Ferry. He was buried today. I have his money. He had $8 (eight dollars and thirteen cents) one testament, one knife, one pipe, one picket corne. I have them and will send them to you the first chance. Respectfully yours, Lieut. C. H.
