Obituary of Elder W. P. Hudson
(Written for the Herald)
Elder W. P. Hudson of Arkansas was born in Dickson County, Tennessee, on May 2, 1852. He moved to Texas in 1868, and the following year to Washington County, Arkansas, where he lived the rest of his life. At age 16, he was convicted of sin and, after much soul sorrow, doubt, and fear, found hope in the Savior and united with the Primitive Baptist Church.
He soon felt called to preach and was ordained at Bethlehem Church in 1886 by Elders J. S. Cowan, R. M. Wood, and J. R. Bollinger. From then on, he devoted himself to ministry and expressed his love for the church with the words:
He married Miss Elvira E. Spears on October 15, 1871. They had eleven children-five sons and six daughters. All survived except the eldest, who died in infancy. Their children included:
• Mrs. Mary Davis (Warm, OK)
• Arteley Owens (Rhea, AR)
• Thomas Hudson (Bend, OR)
• Mrs. Susie Lively (Parter, OK)
• Mrs. Almarinda Ermis (Westville, OK)
• Mrs. Elizabeth Hunton (Summers, AR)
• Scylie Hudson (Warm, OK)
• Ella Cook (Broken Arrow, OK)
• Aquilla Hudson (Kalamma, WA)
He was survived by 83 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and many friends who mourn his passing.
Elder Hudson moderated Bethlehem Church for approximately 35 years without absence.
Rev. Wm. Hudson, pastor of the church here, passed away at his home March 11th, and was laid to rest March 12th in Weddington Cemetery. His wife died more than two years ago. The people of this community loved and respected “Uncle Billy,” as some called him, and his presence will be missed in the church as well as at his own fireside. He is survived by a number of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, some being residents of other states.
