Joy Nelson Webb
84, a resident of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, passed away on July 9, 1976 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was born on November 8, 1891 in Brighton, Tennessee, the daughter of Dr. Thomas Edgar and Alice Murphy Nelson.
She was reared in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Joy Nelson was married to Dr. James W. Webb, DDS. of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, on July 19, 1915. Dr. Webb passed away on September 25, 1947 at the Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
Joy Nelson Webb united with the Presbyterian Church in Prairie Grove soon after her arrival as a bride. Mrs. Webb who possessed a rare gift of leadership almost immediately accepted an office in the local Auxiliary, and for more than thirty-eight years. She served as an officer and member of the Executive Board of the Presbyterian Church in Prairie Grove.
She begin her faithful work in 1919 on the Nominating committee of the Washburn Presbyterian and served on the Board as an officer and member of many committees. At the Presbyterian annual meeting in Dardanelle in 1922 she was elected President to fill an unexpired term and continued to serve as President for two more terms. She served two terms as District Chairman, 1927 and again in 1933. In 1945 she compiled for publication the history of Women’s Work in the Presbyterianism in Arkansas.
Joy Nelson Webb served as President of the Prairie Grove Federated Woman’s Club, also district treasurer of the Arkansas Federation of Woman’s Clubs.
She was a former owner and editor of the Prairie Grove Enterprise and the Society editor after the sale of the paper. For many years she was a Registrar of Vital Statistics in Washington County.
Survivors include two brothers, Edgar Holmes Nelson and Wyatt W. Nelson both of Brighton, Tennessee.
Funeral services will held Saturday, July 10, 1976 at the Luginbuel Chapel in Prairie Grove by the Rev. Trew Lockhart. Burial will follow in the Prairie Grove Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Luginbuel Funeral Home of Prairie Grove.
