Obituary

Ryan Michael Mallett was born on June 5, 1988 in Batesville, Arkansas, to Jim and Debbie Mallett and departed this life on June 27, 2023 in Destin, Florida.

Ryan graduated early from Texas High School in Texarkana, Texas, in 2007 in order to enroll at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  Following a coaching change after his freshman year at UM, Ryan fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming an Arkansas Razorback. As he had to sit out one year because of NCAA transfer rules, he had a year to learn Coach Bobby Petrino’s offense and work with a group of talented receivers, which led to him setting numerous UA records, including most passing yards (7.493) and touchdown passes (62).

Being a gifted athlete, Ryan accomplished a childhood dream of playing professional football in the NFL when he was drafted in 2011 in the third round by the New England Patriots. He played professionally for seven years with the Patriots, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens.  In addition to his sports obligations, Ryan was able to obtain his bachelor's degree from UA. and  later completed his Master’s of Arts in Teaching degree.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Ryan became a high school football coach, which had always been his desire after ending his playing career.  He served two years as offensive coordinator at Mountain Home High School, where he was mentored by head coach Steve Ary.  His ultimate goal was to be a head football coach, and he achieved that goal at White Hall High School this past year before his untimely death.  He was so excited to be able to teach young men how to improve their skills in the game he loved.  His players were his children, and he loved them BIG. He was fortunate to work with men at both schools who were more than coaches — they were friends.

Ryan lived each day to the fullest.  Everyone knew he was a big-hearted, fun-loving guy, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the beach, and of course, playing sports. But the thing closest to his heart was being with family and friends competing in some of his favorite activities: river trips, corn hole tournaments, trash talking his cousins (and Aunt Kay), playing golf, and filling his days with laughter and love.

Ryan was preceded in death by his father Jim Mallett, grandparents Morse and Lula Mallett, grandfather Malcolm Burnette, uncles David Burnette and Danny Mallett.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother Debbie Mallett, sister and brother-in-law Lauren and Justin Hays, nieces Hadley and Harper Hays, nephew Davis Hays, grandmother Gail Burnette, girlfriend Madison Carter, and numerous relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 6, 2023 - 2:00 P.M. at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Mallettown Cemetery C/O Mike and Lisa Dunlap, 19 Town Circle, Springfield AR  72157; Ryan Mallett Memorial Scholarship Mountain Home High School (mountainhomeeducationfoundation.com/donate),

Ryan was such a good hearted young man and a great competitor. I remember giving him golf lessons . Along with Lauren, after school some days. He listened intently to everything I said, even though he could already golf better than I. He was one of the good ones. RIP Ryan. You will be missed by all who knew you!

Ryan made a huge impact on my son while coaching in Mtn Home. Because he knew each player so well, he was able to catch a potentially serious injury in my son. Because of him, we avoided serious injury. I’m so thankful for him, his attention to my kiddo, and most of all his love of my kid. Many many prayers for your family. Your Bomber family is praying for you all ??????

I was a huge fan of Ryan because I graduated at Texas High in Texarkana in 1964. I followed his career at THS listening to Tiger games on the radio via the internet. I watched him play as a freshman for THS in the playoffs at Texas High sitting next to my friend George Kirtley, a former THS coach. I graduated at U of A and watched him play every home game in LR and Fayetteville from the 35 yard line. Praying for Debbie and the family during this difficult time.

Mrs. Mallet & Lauren, It breaks my heart to have heard about Ryan’s untimely and tragic passing. He was loved by so many. I remember watching him grow up when y’all lived down the road from us off Wolf Track Rd and watching him follow his daddy around on the football field back in the 90’s. All the guys from our ‘96 class loved him because he would be right there on the sideline with his dad cheering them on at every football game. He grew up into a great young man and I am so glad that he got to accomplish his dreams. I always have such fond memories of him and your family. Coach was my PE teacher one year and you were my English teacher growing up in Lincoln the Mallets felt like family to all of us. Just know, he will be greatly missed. I know y’all weren’t at Lincoln for forever, but our small community sure loved you as family and still does love your whole family all these years later. Ever since we heard, we all have been heartbroken to hear about Ryan’s passing as well as Coach’s passing not to long ago. Please let us know if you need anything at all. We are all here for you. You, Lauren and all your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I only saw Ryan on the football field. As a Razorback fan, he made my Hog heart swell with pride. My late husband absolutely admired him. Our biggest thrill was the Sugar Bowl. Just seeing him play was awesome. I am truly sorry for your loss. May God wrap you in his arms and comfort your hearts, each of you and your family. Forever a Ryan Mallett Fan, Laura

I first met Ryan at my bar in Branson, Crazy Craig;s Cheeky Monkey Bar. After that anytime he visited again he would charge through the front door shouting " Where is Crazy Craig ". Ironicaly I had wondered just the day before his tragic accident when I would see him again. Family will be in my prayers as I look forward to the day I see him again.

I am so heartbroken to heat the terrible, terrible news about Ryan Mallett. I was born and raised in AR many years ago. I live elsewhere now but always remained a Razorback fan. I watched every game Ryan played with U of AR. He had the most dedication and heartfelt drive of any quarterback I've ever seen. He took hit after hit and got back up. Even though my younger sister and another Razorback best friend are gone now, I have so many precious memories of talking & texting about the games.Thank you Ryan for making the games unbelievable! GOD bless you.

Debbie, our love and prayers go out to you and the whole Mallett family. I remember seeing Ryan at Morse and Lula’s home. He would just hug us like he loved us. We were so proud of him and loved getting to watch him play the game he loved so much when we could. Much love and prayers. Mike and Theresa

I pray for comfort to Coach Ryan Mallett’s family including his friends and students. He will be dearly missed to all who had any contact with him. My son referred to him as Coach Ry-Ry and I’m sure Coach Mallett wouldn’t have cared at all because he loved those kids. God has a wonderful addition to heaven. My sincerest condolences to the family.
