Obituary
Michael Sylvester Pirtle, known affectionately as Mike, passed away on January 5, 2026, at the age of 75. Born on February 24, 1950, in Manila, Arkansas, Mike lived a life dedicated to service, family, and community.
A proud 23-year veteran of the United States Army, Mike served with distinction and courage. He completed two tours of duty in Vietnam and also served during the Persian Gulf War, including Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. His exemplary service was recognized with numerous honors, including the Army Commendation Medal, the Oklahoma Sergeant Major's Award, the Oklahoma Commendation Medal, the prestigious Oklahoma Star of Valor, the Sharpshooter Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (with service star), the Vietnam Campaign Medal (with three stars), multiple Army Good Conduct Medals, the Driver and Mechanic Badge, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, and the Southwest Asia Service Medal (with service star).
After retiring from the Army, Mike continued his commitment to protecting others by serving as a police officer for 17 years, where his kindness and dedication touched many lives in his community.
Mike was married for 46 years to the love of his life, LaJeana Pirtle, building a strong and loving partnership that was the foundation of his world. He was a devoted father and a cherished Papaw, always putting his family first. Known for his gentle spirit and unwavering kindness, Mike had a heart for serving others. He found great joy in hosting cookouts and family gatherings, where laughter, stories, and good food brought everyone together.
Mike's legacy of quiet strength, selfless service, and deep love will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Michael was preceded in death by his loving wife, LaJeana Pirtle; mother, Louise Pirtle; father, Jessie Pirtle; sister, Flora Carmenet Hensley; and brothers, Walter Pirtle, William Pirtle, Nancy Pirtle, Flossie May Pirtle, Jessie Wayne Pirtle, Jimmy Dean Pirtle, Emmett Pirtle, and Danny Ray Pirtle.
Michael is survived by his son, Timothy Pirtle, and wife Kate; special nephew, Patrick Jenkins, and wife Isabel; special niece, Stephanie Jenkins; and his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly: Emma, Oliva, and Everly Pirtle; Dylan, Noah, Brooklyn, Isabella, and Ethan. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Jo Trantham of Monticello; nephew, Carl Dean Hensley of Monticello; Monica Linely of Monticello; Donnie Pirtle of Texas; and a host of other nieces and nephews. Mike was also blessed to have a sister-in-law and several brothers-in-law, whom he loved as if they were his own.
Visitation will be 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. Sunday, January 11, 2026.
A celebration of Mike's life will be held at Luginbuel Funeral Home in Prairie Grove on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., with graveside service to follow at the Fayetteville National Cemetery.
