Cane Hill twp ========== WASHINGTON COUNTY HISTORY Shiloh Museum - Springdale, Arkansas 1989 Loverance Evans Hardesty Loverance Evans Hardesty, known as "Love Evans", was born 1808, Madison County, Kentucky. His parents are Henry Hardesty and Sarah (Sally) Evans. Grandparents are thought to be Benjamin Hardesty and Elizabeth Hance. In the early 1830s, Love Evans Hardesty was living in Washington County, Arkansas where, on September 27, 1836, he enlisted in the Cherokee Indian War at Fort Coffee, Choctaw Nation, and served as First Sergeant in the Arkansas Volunteers under Captain Bennett G. Clark. He was discharged at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory, on March 21, 1837 and later received 160 acres of Bounty Land in Washington County, Arkansas for his service. Loverance Evans Hardesty married Mary L. "Polly" Whinery in Washington County, Arkansas, in April 1840. They lived and farmed in the Strickler, Cove Creek, and Cane Hill areas of Washington County, and for a short time in Missouri. Mary L. Whinery was born 1824 in Tennessee and is the daughter of William Whinery and Frances, who lived in Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1830, later moving to Washington County, Arkansas. The immigrant ancestor was Patrick Whinery, Jr., about 1722 in Northern Ireland and came to the colonies in 1738. Patrick was a weaver and lived in Pennsylvania until he contracted consumption in later years and became a peddler, moving to North Carolina. Mary L. Whinery Hardesty died July 8, 1865, in Missouri. In 1892, Love Evans Hardesty was living in Enterprise, Sebastian County, Arkansas with a daughter, Maggie Worley, where he applied for and received a pension on his war service. He moved back to the Cove Creek/Cane Hill area of Washington County and lived with his daughter, Frances Scott, until he died shortly before 1900 at the age of 92. He is thought to be buried in an unmarked grave in Strickler Cemetery in Washington County. Loverance Evans Hardesty and Mary L. Whinery were the parents of six children: 1. William Henry "Sam" - born May 6, 1849, married Sarah Ann Love. 2. Mary - born 1844, married Jim Caldwell. 3. Frances - born 1845, married Jim Scott 4. Wallace - married Lucinda Cecil 5. Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" - born March 13, 1859, married Jefferson Davis Worley. 6. Dialpha - born September 10, 1862, married Joel Abshier. Wallace, Mary, Frances and Dialpha all resided in Washington County as do many of their descendants today. By: Colleen C. Worley
