Research Notes

Mary was born to Charles Wesley and Sarah Malinda Jordan Paine. She married Marshall Davis Ferguson on July 4, 1895 in Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia. Born to this union: Margaret Fern, Snow Rebecca, Russell G., Violet L., Neva, Estella V. "Stella" and Marshall Davis Jr. Marshall moved the family to Oklahoma. From there they settled in Yoncalla, Oregon. Marshall had only been living there about a year when he was killed in a hunting accident. He was deer hunting with Mr. Brumfield, Albert Bacon and Mr. LaFleur. The tragedy occurred in Elkhead Canyon, about ten miles east of Yoncalla on August 6, 1909. Albert Bacon mistakenly shot Marshall while the party was making their way down the canyon. Mr. Bacon admitted he had been reckless. He was acquitted of the accidental shooting. Mary buried Marshall in Oregon. She moved the children back to Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia. Mary raised the children, never remarried and remained there until her death.
