CAMPBELL, James Berry - Hannah Campbell, widow of James B. Campbell, who died in February of 1895, filed Widow Application #13194 with the Confederate Pension Board of Washington County for a Confederate widow pension and it was received as allowed on August 10, 1914 at the State, her husband’s service with Company G, 16thArkansas Infantry from 1861 thru 1865 was cited. [State of Arkansas Confederate Pension Archives] James B. Campbell is <me of the well-to-do agriculturists of Washington County, Ark., and is a native of Middle Tennessee, born in Bedford County May 15, 1835. His father, Berry Campbell, was born in Kentucky, but was married in Tennessee to Mary E. Butler, who was also born in Kentucky. His death occurred previous to the birth of his son, James B. His widow continued to reside in Tennessee until 1848. when she came to Arkansas, locating first in Pike County and afterward in Washington County, where she died in 1878. James B. Campbell made his home with his mother until her death. In 1861 he enlisted in the Confederate army, in the Sixteenth Arkansas Infantry, and served until the close of the war, being a participant in the battles of Pea Ridge, Corinth, Iuka, Port Hudson, Mark's Mill and Saline River. In the winter of 1859 Mr. Campbell was married to Miss Hannah Buchanan, a daughter of Leander Buchanan, one of the early settlers of Washington County, and their union has resulted in the birth of six children: James E., William R., Wiley B., Mar7 E., John and Claude. In 1874 Mr. Campbell located on his present farm o 207t acres, and is considered one of the prosperous farmers of the county. He has a pleasant and comfortable home, and has a nice orchard of two acres of select and grafted fruits.
