He was the son of John Terry, Jr. from Tennessee and Nancy Ennis from North Carolina. His parents moved the family to Marion Co, AR by 1841. Both parents died in 1848 and Clark lived with his uncle and aunt, William Terry and Barbara Ennis. He married Tobitha Jane Long from Indiana on November 5, 1856 at Center Store Twp, AR (no longer exists). Clark and Tobitha moved to Sunset, Washington Co, AR.
