LEWISVILLE - Vera Emma Cruse Miller was born near Prairie Grove, Ark., on Sept. 14, 1918, to Lacy and Willie Cruse. She met the love of her life, Newman Miller, in Fayetteville, Ark. As Newman was both the kicker and a tackle for the Razorbacks, and Lacy, the chief of Fayetteville Police, did not approve of football players, the couple eloped and were married on Feb. 12, 1939. Blub and Vera moved to San Angelo in the 1940's, where they raised two daughters. Vera worked and eventually retired from Goodyear Tire Test Company. She was an avid golfer, liked to play poker and served in several local organizations, including a stint as president of the American Business Women's Association. She slipped away on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2012, peacefully and in the comfort of her own home. Vera is survived by one daughter, Judith Schofield of Dallas; five grandchildren, Lori Lynn Schofield of Boone, N.C., Jay Schofield of Plano, Julie Watson of Mertzon, Louis James of Christoval and Wanda Green of San Angelo; eight great-grandchildren, Dustin Watson, Lauren Watson, Jack Davis, H.L. James, Lucas James, Logan Schofield, Carson Green and Aaron Green; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Newman Miller; and a daughter, Marilyn Kay James.
