his father obituary Ex-Carpenter Dies, Son in Korea Missing Funeral services for James Wiley Howell, 79, of 1406 E. Fourth St., retired carpenter and a Tulsan 18 years, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Whisenhunt-Winterringer Funeral Home chapel. Interment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. Mr. Howell died late Sunday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. F. H. Floyd Hartwell Clement, 1104 E. Thirty-ninth St., less than 17 hours after relatives learned that a son, Capt. Howard D. Howell, was missing in action in Korea. Capt. Howell, one of seven Tulsa County men holding No. 158, the first draft number drawn from a goldfish bowl in Washington Oct. 29, 1940, entered service in January, 1941 and had been on duty in the Far East about three years. His plane was found crashed in Korea, his wife, Lavella, notified his brother, W. D. Howell, 8902 E. Fourteenth St., in a telephone call from her home in Japan. A daughter, Hamilla, 3, is with Mrs. Howell there. Details of the mishap were not learned. Mr. Howell, ill of a heart ailment several months, died without being told his son was missing. His wife, the pilot's mother, also was not told immediately of her son's plight. Mr. Howell was born in Prairie Grove, Ark., and resided there until coming to Tulsa. Capt. Howell was a carpenter before entering service. Also surviving Mr. Howell are two other daughters, Mrs. Bessie Nelson, 415 S. Kenosha Ave., and Mrs. G. E. Bloomfield, Okmulgee; five brothers, including Charles Howell, Broken Arrow; a sister, Mrs. T. C. Parks, Broken Arrow; and six other grandchildren.
