Shannon - Fisher Feud Finally, on June 2, 1869, nineteen-year-old Noah Columbus Fitzwater and young Newton C. Stout were deliberately waylaid and killed near Evansville because they were regarded as belonging to the Shannon side. The evidence allows us to go further in Stout's case: John Coleman was identified as the man who killed Newton C. Stout. Note: Newton Stout was listed within the 1850 Washington County Census, along with his father James W. Stout, mother Elizabeth, Charles, William, Sarah, John, James and Newton. Coleman and R. Edmondson were both subsequently identified as being concerned in the Stout-Fitzwater killings. They were later surrounded by pursuing officers in Benton County and killed after refusing to surrender and attempting to escape.
