Three Die, One Injured As Freight Hits Truck On Grade Near M’Allen Driver Says He Failed to Hear Bell or Whistle; Car Cut in Two (Special Telegram) McALLEN, Tex., July 5.-Three persons were instantly killed and another was badly injured when a light truck was struck by a Missouri Pacific freight train a half mile west of Val Verde shortly after 9 o’clock Sunday morning. The dead: MRS. R. A. YAWS, 50, who lived a mile north of the crossing. JUANITA YAWS, 15, daughter of Mrs. Yaws. CLEATUS ADRIAN BLANCET, 12, nephew of Mrs. Yaws. R. A. Yaws, 53, was injured. Two Kreidler ambulances rushed to the scene but only Yaws survived the accident in the race to the McAllen hospital. County Traffic Officers Ed Etter and Dick Rowson were driving along the highway within 100 yards of the tragedy when they saw a big cloud of dust and stopped to investigate. They were joined a few moments by State Highway Patrolman Bill Foreman and the three conducted the investigation, in conjunction with Justice of the Peace Russell of Donna. The officers said the train struck the truck when it was squarely across the rails. The impact of the crash broke the truck in two pieces, the bed falling more than 30 feet from the crossing. The remaining wreckage was carried 265 yards down the track, according to measurements made by the officers. When the train came to a halt the wreckage was removed and the three bodies were found beneath it. Yaws was thrown clear of the wreck and was found badly hurt, beside the right of way. The victims had started to Donna to attend Sunday School. The injured man told officers who talked to him at the hospital that he did not hear the train whistle or ring its bell, that he did not see the train and that “I can’t seem to remember about it.” The crossing was clear, Deputy Sheriff Rowson stated. Blancet is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Blancet, three brothers and five sisters. The family resided near the Yaws home, a mile north of the scene of the wreck. The Blancet family came to the Valley from Oklahoma about two years ago. Surviving Mrs. Yaws are her husband and three daughters, Mrs. Lora Rogers of Mercedes and Mrs. Ona, Tracey and Sylvia Yaws, both of Donna. Mrs. Yaws also leaves one brother, B. L. Blancet of Stamford, and four sisters, Mrs. Emma Baker of Beeville, Mrs. Josie Kirk of Gause, Mrs. Nancy Armstrong of Minerva and Mrs. Nellie Wooley of Donna. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
