Mt. Pleasant School
Mt. Pleasant was an early Winslow School, coming after Mt.
Wooster. Classes were held in a log building on land that was
later to become the farm of P. E. McClendon. Long after the log
building was abandoned as a school, it was used by McClendon
as a barn, the only barn in the area to boast a blackboard along
one wall.
During the early years attendance frequently topped 70 and
hit the 80 mark some years. All of these children shared one
large room, regardless of age or grade placement until 1905 when
a room, "the little room" was· added to the south side of the
building to hold the students in the lower grades.
The school was again enlarged in 1912 with the addition of
another small wing to be used as a high school.
This school survived until the Thanksgiving holiday weekend
in 1918 when it was destroyed by fire. That Sunday fire went
unnoticed, because most residents were inside their homes avoiding
the cold weather. By the time it was discovered and everyone
had rallied around, it was beyond.saving. The old school bell had
fallen to the ground along with the collapsed roof.
A partial list of teachers and principals is all that remains
