ai summary as of May 20, 2026 by Loyd W. Luginbuel
Born in Texas around 1868, William B. “Will” Turner came of age during a period when the American frontier was still being settled and worked. Raised in Lamar County, Texas, he was the son of Alfred R. Turner, a Kentucky native, and Sarah A. Turner, who had been born in Texas. As a young boy in the 1880 census, William was already helping support the family as a farm laborer while also attending school, learning the value of hard work and perseverance early in life.
Growing up in rural Texas shaped William into a hardworking and practical man. Farming was the backbone of life in those years, and like many young men of his generation, he learned to work the land and provide for those around him. In August of 1895, he married Daisy Maud Risinger in Lamar County, Texas, beginning a marriage and family that would carry him across several states during his lifetime.
By 1900, William and Daisy were living in Red River County, Texas, where he farmed his own mortgaged property. They were building a life together during a difficult but hopeful era in rural America. Their first son, Dillard, had already been born, and the young family represented the optimism and determination common among farming families at the turn of the twentieth century. William was literate, able to read and write, something not always common in rural communities of that era, and he clearly valued steady work and responsibility.
Over the following years, William and Maud raised a large family. Census records show sons and daughters born as the family moved through Texas and eventually into Oklahoma. By 1920, they were living in Cotton County, Oklahoma, where William worked as a laborer in the fields. Though the work was demanding and often uncertain, he continued providing for his growing household, which then included several children: Delbert, Mary, Fred, Van, and Claud. Like many families of that generation, the Turners followed opportunity where it could be found, enduring hardships while remaining close-knit and resilient.
The hardships of life were not unknown to William. By 1930, census records show him widowed and living as a boarder in Washington County, Arkansas. Even through personal loss and the difficult years surrounding the Great Depression, he continued moving forward. Arkansas became an important connection point for several of his children, including his daughter Mary Crudup of Fayetteville and daughter Lucille Morris of Morrow.
Later in life, William relocated west to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where several of his sons had established themselves. By 1940, at seventy-four years old, he was still working full time as a watchman, laboring nearly year-round despite his age. His willingness to continue working reflected the grit and determination that had defined his entire life. Living with his son Ben and daughter-in-law Viola, William remained connected to his family and continued contributing in every way he could.
William B. Turner passed away in Albuquerque in February of 1944 at the age of seventy-six. His obituary noted that he had lived in Albuquerque for many years and was survived by five sons and two daughters. His sons worked in trades that reflected the industrious spirit of their father, including well drilling, military service, and mechanical work. His children and grandchildren carried his legacy into future generations spread across New Mexico, Arkansas, California, Arizona, and beyond.
William’s life was one of movement, labor, family devotion, and endurance. From the farms of Texas to Oklahoma fields, from Arkansas communities to the growing city of Albuquerque, he lived through Reconstruction, the settling of the West, World War I, the Great Depression, and the beginnings of World War II. Though records preserve only pieces of his story, they reveal a man who continually worked to provide for his family, adapted to changing times, and left behind generations who continued the Turner name throughout the American Southwest.
