Obituary

Katie McCoy was not a woman who could be summed up in a few sentences. She could not be duplicated or replicated. She was fierce, independent, intelligent, witty, painfully comical, and a true pioneer. She was an exceptional cook, gardener, artist, and historian.

Katie valued people for their hearts and nothing else. She loved people of different races and social classes during a time when she herself was judged and ridiculed for it.

Katie always marched to the beat of her own drum. She always advocated for the underdog, stood up for what she believed in, and fought for what was right. She never allowed laziness and never accepted mediocrity. She voiced her opinions loudly for all to hear while wearing her heart on her sleeve.

We will miss her greatly, but she left behind a true legacy: delicious recipes, heartfelt memories, and the example of a life lived authentically. There is nothing we could say that would truly do justice to her larger-than-life personality.

We loved her so much, and we are thankful that she is no longer in pain. The void she has left can never be filled. We look forward to the day we meet again.

I will always remember Katie for her kindness and hospitality. She will be missed for sure. I will always think of her when the Irises, she gave me a few years ago, bloom into a beautiful purple.

Until we meet again Katie!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Deborah, I have so many memories of our High School Days and being at your house and Momma Katie lining us out on what we needed to do. Her laughter filled the house and seems like she was in the kitchen a lot. And she was the only woman I knew that could smell a snake before we could ever see it (while we were out looking for limbs, willows and whatever she needed to make baskets). She was so proud of you and your siblings and I know she loved y’all more than anything. Praying for you sweet friend. Love you bunches!~ Tammy
